Should i get a cheaper second bass or an expensive one?

I have been learning to play bass for a bit more than 8 months and i was thinking about getting a new bass like, a month later. But i don't really know if i should get an expensive one (example, the schecter hellraiser extereme) or a cheaper one (example, an mim fender). I'm not sure if i should get a cheaper second bass or an expensive one as i don't know my preferences. Like, which kind of tone i prefer or how thin the neck should be. Of course, i will try them out at a store.
getting one means i will be sticking with these for at least a few years. so which one should i get?
Get a better amp and cab.

I would say just go to store and try out ALL the basses, then base your case on feel, tones and playability(although this is the hard one if basses are not setup properly) and play them through the SAME AMP. See if you can tell which bass gives you the "I want to play this all day and night long" feeling.
Then you will get a good idea of what it is you want. Then if it is within price range then go for it, if not then save and wait.
BUT here is the thing to think of....are you playing through a cheap average sounding amp or a good quality amp?
I ask because no matter what bass you play, if you play it in a blah sounding amp, it will hinder your playing. If you have a decent bass now, then do a pro setup and get a good amp first....then you can have a quality sound.
Just my 1-1/2 cent.

Most of the MIM Fender issues after 2010 are quite good. MIJ are generally considered to be even better.

I've played and owned many Shecters. They are generally built quite nicely, but I never found a tone I liked with Schecter or EMG active pickups.

I didn't notice what Bass you're learning on. What Bass do you have? What strings? What amp, what type of pickup(s)? You should know the answer to these questions, before you purchase a second Bass.

Always buy cheap basses. For one, you can get more, and more is always better. Second, cheap basses are just as good as expensive ones because reasons.

I'd ask why you need another bass after only 8 months? If you have a tight budget I'd spend that money on lessons.

IMO you don't need a backup bass until you start gigging.

If you really have to upgrade from your main bass get the best bass you can afford and make your old bass your backup.

An option could be to sell your old bass and put that money into the pot so you can buy an even better bass. Get a good used one and your money will go even further.

what does 8 months have to do with anything?

and I have never needed a "back up" bass at a gig.

What I do like is to have distinct different sounds and different feels. Some days I just feel like my SR650 and others the LB70. Tweek the amp for whichever and I'm good to go.

I still only bring one to a gig. I do leave one at the practice space....nice not having to lug stuff back and forth all the time.

I am never one to buy "cheap" anything. You can get high quality at a low price in the used market. My LB70 was under $500 for a truly great bass.
There is nothing cheap about it beyond the price tag.

I say get an expensive one. In my case I have an ebmm stingray and a ric 4003 and 2 mim/mij fenders. The ray and the ric have stopped all gas for me. I find myself thinking is this better than what i got?... nope ok move on... skill level doesnt matter get what you like. I wish i had these basses when i was a kid.

Why do you want another bass? What do you miss in your current one? Which bass sounds of songs do you really like? Try out a lot of basses till you find 'the one'. I think it doesn't matter if that bass is a cheap or expensive bass.
