Hola,

So I've got a scar of sorts on my right wrist I've been thinking about. I got burned around my wrist that's about 2 inches wide and 2.5 in length. In that area of skin I don't have arm hair and it's basically a big red mark. Getting a watch to put on my left wrist might distract other people's eyes from noticing my scar first I've been thinking.

Just something that crossed my mind, what do ya'll think? I figure it could go either way.

A really bad haircut would distract from it even more.

I would go that route.

I voted own the scar.

You could make up an exciting story about it...it could be the result of rescuing a princess from a fire-breathing dragon or something.

A bit more seriously, how about a tattoo to disguise it?

Even more seriously, have people been noticing it at all, or is this just you being over self-conscious?
Most of us have 'flaws' we can easily obsess about only to discover others never notice, or care about, them.

If anything, a watch, if big enough to cover anything, would just draw attention to the wrist. I doubt people care - we all have scars and marks. Yeah, come up with a tongue in cheek story in case anyone asks. Other than that, ignore it. I've seen people with scars that big on their face just ignore it.

I notice you said “get a watch” rather than “wear a watch...”
... So, I think the question to ask here is do you have a watch picked out? :p
Because if you just want a watch and need an excuse, then go for it, man. It’s not a scene I keep up with but I bet there are some hella cool ones, and it’s never a bad idea to know what time it is.

That said, I am in the “own your body” camp with this one. People all have their oddities.

I’ve got a pretty prominent scar on my left forearm obtained in a really embarrassing way, but I’ve come to think it looks really cool despite its genuinely stupid origins. Sometimes I like to beat people’s assumptions to the punch and tell them a tall-tale about how I got it (my two favorites being 99% true stories about a bobcat and a party trick with a samurai sword) but the truth is nobody ever asks. I think people just kind of know that everybody’s body is weird in different ways, and most just don’t really care.

Worked with a gent with a pretty big burn on his arm once and never thought him anything but the most charming and attractive fellow in the room. He had to deliberately point out to me that his burn was in the perfect likeness of a smiley face and that he’d given it to himself drunk at a party. Even knowing didn’t shake my admiration for his character, since I’d spent most of my time knowing him not caring or noticing most of the time. Chances are people who know you aren’t nearly as distracted by it as you think, and like you not in spite of the mark, but because they straight don’t give a hoot about it.

But seriously. If you want that watch, get it. Just show us the one you picked. c;

If you do decide to get a watch, and you should...all the best people wear them...check out the thread I started ages ago on wearing one, there's some cool examples there.Watches ... Yes/No ? (now with poll)

And @Chicory Blue , if you think you can drop in a hint at one of your awesome stories without giving us the full story, you're sadly mistaken. Come on, now.

Also, @Ooba Tooba , that fish skeleton tattoo is awesome. I've a nephew who works fishing charters in Florida and has a nasty scar that'd work perfectly with, so if you've no objection, I'm sending him that photo.

Not a big watch fan actually haha but don't dislike them at all. Part of the reason is because I'm starting to apply for internships and am thinking it might help so people don't remember me as the dude with the big scar. But perhaps that could be a positive thing too. Haha but if I do get one I will show it

I think I’ve told the bobcat story on here before... few years back, my pizzagal days. I was taking out the trash, and my soop told me I should probably kick the door on the dumpster enclosure to scatter the rats before I opened it, or else I’d end up face to face with a rat.

As an avowed lover of critters, I of course scoffed at the very idea of *not* meeting a nice big rat, so rather than announcing my presence, I elected to sneak into the dumpster enclosure as quietly as possible, hoping to get the drop on the local fauna... and, in a sense, I got my wish, coming face to face with a bobcat.

This much of the story is 100% true. What happens next is where I flub the details very slightly. What actually happened was the bobcat vaulted over my head (he was on top of the dumpster) and ran away. However, in the enhanced version of the story, the bobcat uses me as a springboard in his escape, his back leg catching my arm as he vaults, leaving me with a superficial scratch that healed into a totally boss scar, and memory that will last forever.

The moral of the story? Scars are cool, and *always* sneak up on crepuscular predators.

If you are self-conscious about the scar, if it saps your mojo, if you're constantly thinking about it, then I don't think a watch will help. You'll just be self-conscious about the scar under the really cool watch you're uncomfortable wearing.

If you want a watch, wear a watch! I wish I had the wrists for them. But then I'd need a budget for them.

People have scars for lots of reasons. I bet it's not the most interesting thing about you. If I'm wrong and it is, perhaps work on smiling more, or being kinder, or dressing better, or reading a variety of books, or learning a new skill, or or or.

I had a coworker who had a port wine stain that covered nearly half her face. I've thought about her numerous times over the years, but until I started this post and went through the mental file of 'who do I know with interesting features?' I hadn't thought about this particular thing about her. Sure, I noticed it at first. But after a couple of days, my brain quit thinking about it.
