Should I go for it?

This is my first time buying a bass. I'm currently renting a beginner bass + amp, so I'm unsure. Basically, it's a Peavey T-40 bass and a Crate BX100 amp. Comes with a hard shell case and a leather strap. The cost comes to about $450-$475 (still need to haggle). Is it a good deal? Also, I mostly play metal, so is it good for that? I also don't know how old the amp is, but does it matter?

So $285 not including shipping. price most likely to go up as time moves on too.

I think that the peavey would be a great beginner bass. The Crate I'm a little iffy on, but if you don't abuse it or try to use it in a loud band setting it would probably do alright for you. I would definitely try to get it for less than what they are asking.

Edit: Check the TalkBass classifieds for some good deals too!

Those old Peavey basses had a good sound and were very well made. Very heavy though and one of the reasons I didn't buy one when they first came out. I already had a Fender that weighed too much.

The Crate amp is nothing special. It'd be fine for practice at home and maybe with a group in a rehearsal space if you weren't playing loud. But, if you did I'd expect you'd blow the speaker in no time.

I've looked at those other old Peaveys on TB and they look like a good deal.

If you go with this one and it's in your area you save on hassle and shipping problems. But I'd talk them down by $100 and want to play it first.
