Should I upgrade my bass?

Hey guys, im a first time poster long time lurker here.

I've only been playing bass for about a year now but I've picked up pretty quickly and have found myself playing in church for P&W an average of nearly 3 weeks in a month (5th week in a row already) and in a band who opened for another band for 400 people

To cut to the chase, im rapidly outgrowing my Yamaha Rbx270 which doesnt seem to have the cut for alt rock(my band) or the smoothness for P&W.

Ive been blessed by being able to work for my parents and am looking to buy an Ibanez SR1205 which seems to be perfect for me as I'm a small, frail 16 year old - light,versatile,HUGE tone, and also sexy (I've tried it out at a store)

So my question is, should I save up for it or should I keep my Yammy? (nothing wrong with it, love how easy it plays) :confused:

Hey welcome to TalkBass! Glad you finally posted.

Couple questions. When you say that the Yamaha "doesn't seem to have the cut for alt rock(my band) or the smoothness for P&W", what do you mean exactly? (And what is P&W?) What rig do you play through? How close are you to having enough for an upgrade? Are there any other major financial responsibilities in your life right now?

I have a couple of Ibby's and Fenders. The Ibby is great for small hands and smaller string spacing. In fact I am getting ready to shave the neck down on my Dimension V. It's a great sounding bass but the neck kills my hand . On my Ibanez SR785, I ordered custom Nordstrand Fat Stacks. The guys like the sound of the Fender cause of the PJ , but the Ibby is much preferred by all. my main bass!

I usually find newer musicians refer to a lack of cut when a bass doesn't have active electronics. I'm not familiar with the Yamaha or specific ibanez your talking about but active may be the way you want to go. Warwick makes some nice sounding affordable active basses as does squier.

Sorry that was phrased really poorly, it's always DI in church, fender rumble for the band with the exception of playing for a concert hosted by the church. The yammy just gets completely lost in the mix to the audience. Turning up the mids causes my bass to sound really throaty and harsh although on the amp my mids are already bumped

Would love to buy from the TB community but.. I live in Malaysia and the shipping would be ridiculously expensive. I'm pretty much sold on the ibby premium, I tried it alongside an American jazz, a select jazz, an ebmm ray, and an ibby prestige, but nothing held against the clarity and power of those big singles on the premium.

If the Ibby appeals, get it. You’re young, just starting out, now’s the time to “experiment”. The day will come when you realize pretty much ANY electric bass out there will do just about ANY job. The rest is in your hands and amplification....

The bass that feels best and sounds best TO YOU is the right bass.

Then I'd say get that one. Sounds like you already like it.
