Should i wait on snow leopard?

so one of my macs is an intel macbook pro running 10.4.11 and my pro tools is 7.4. i have a no cost update that gets me version 8

but with 8 you have to run at least 10.5.5 If im going to pay to upgrade to that i might as well wait for snow leopard?

i know that there usually are bugs with the first of any operating system and that a program like pro tools might not work right away with snow leopard.

what do you think?

If recording is a source of income for you I'd recommend waiting. I know there was a big issue with service pack 3 for XP way back when that caused many issues with recording programs. There was an article in Pro Sound News about it.

Otherwise, have at it and report back.

If you decide to upgrade you only have to wait until Friday. The cost is minimal, $29, and the benefits appear to be great. I don't worry about Apple software, unlike the rush to market and let the users debug it Microsoft products, but it is your system. I am getting my copy in two days. Good luck.

Apple software is usually stable. That said, I'd wait a week to load it.

My concern would be on the ProTools end. I used to use ProTools and if I remember correctly, they would be months behind Apple's upgrade tract. Very frustrating.

You obviously could give it a try on your own but I don't think Digidesign would recommend it.

Always let others jump on the bandwagon and install major upgrade and live with the problems. Unless you have a test system or extra drive to install for testing on. Especially if you use PT Digi is slow to approve new OS updates. Snow Leopard has some major system changes that could effect a lot of programs so I would be patient and let other live on the bleeding edge.

I cannot wait for Snow Leopard, but they have nothing to do with audio or PT. If you go by history, PT has always been out of sync with Apple, whether it is software or hardware. 6 months has behind typically....

Speaking as an IT person (which I am these days) - If you are planning to upgrade the Operating System on your machine, then you need to ensure that your software is compatible with the new version of your OS prior to upgrading to it.

I just Googled Digidesign and found this one their Website:

Pro Tools Compatibility with Upcoming Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard08/24/09

Apple has announced that they will begin shipping the new Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard 64-bit operating system on August 28th. Avid is working closely with Apple to deliver compatible, high-quality versions of Pro Tools® as soon as possible. Please check back periodically for updates on Avid's Snow Leopard support status.


In other words - leave it alone for now!!.

IMHO, if it isn't broken - don't fix it. If you can deal with PT 7.4 with Tiger for the next few months then I'd do that. Apple is pretty rock-solid with their OSes but it never hurts to be cautious of a major OS update. If you do decide to update, make sure to create a full system snapshot and backup of your system in case of incompatibility. I've got my copy coming in today. I don't use Pro Tools, but I'll let you know how it goes stability-wise. :D

I'm running a 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro (model previous to the new unibodies) with 2 gigs of ram (most they offered at the time) currently running OSX 10.5.8.

I was under the impression that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade disc will only work on machines running Leopard. If you want to install Snow Leopard on a Tiger machine, then there is a "Mac Box Set" update that you have to buy, which costs much more......$169.

From the Apple store under system requirements for Snow Leopard:
"Upgrading from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger.
If your Intel-based Mac is running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, purchase the Mac Box Set, which is a single, affordable package that includes Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard; iLife ’09, with the latest versions of iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, and iDVD; and iWork ’09, Apple’s productivity suite for home and office including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote."

Came in as expected on Friday. Installed in under an hour and working great. My Mac boots up, goes to sleep, wakes from sleep, and shuts down faster, as well as converts audio/video files much faster than it used to.

Unless you want iLife/iWork 09, you shouldn't need to purchase any additional updates to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Unless your software that you want to use charges for updates or something. (some do, lame as it is...)

I currently use PT LE 8 with Leopard on my iMac. I am definitely going to upgrade to Snow Leopard; however, I can wait a month or two until it is certified by Digidesign (and any required upgrades for PT LE 8 are available).

If I were you, I would wait until the Digi announces compatibility, then upgrade your OS and your PT software.
