At 1 meter! Who in their right mind would stand 1m from that setup? Not to mention that, due to the physical extent of all those speaker cabinets, you're going to be more than 1m from most of them.



Surely that's not measured at 1 meter...

That shuttle number was the first thing I found on google, and it didn't say what distance. For each doubling of distance, subtract 6dB, so at 8 meters, it's only 160dB.

80 cabinets
30,000 watts (all the amps Tom has)
Acoustic coupling = 6db for every doubling of the # of cabs = 38db
Gain from amps = 3db for every doubling of power = 45db
Cabinet efficiency = 95db 1W/1m (let's be conservative)

add those together, you get ...
178 db! :eek:


(The Who's record concert is listed at 126dB, at 32 meters, which works out to 156dB at 1 meter)
(the space shuttle taking off is 150dB)

Here are some practical considerations...

30,000watts. You'll need about twice that in capacity, since I'm guessing the net of all those amps is about 75% effeciency. Plus, you'd want some leeway. So, 50,000 watts, at 120v is a 500 amp service. So, you're looking at a 50kVA single phase pot, or just disconnect your neighbors if you are on a large enough pot already.

If not, you'll have to call the utility company and have them drop one of [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] off.

I'm wondering what a power conditioner would look like for that kind of setup. Ahh.. here we go.

Next, you'll probably just want to run outlets straight from the 1/0 taps. It's a good thing it's winter. You can do it outside so that nothing overheats. I suggest a few buckets of H frame or "C" copper taps and one of Invalid Link Removed.

Plus, you might want to go here and buy a couple reels of Belden cord and a couple hundred 1/4" jacks:

Seriously, you guys are cracking me up! I have a hard enough time trying to figure out how to fit all of my basses in one photo, much less all of my amps/cabs! :p

But, I might be able to just cover one whole wall of my basement in cabs. Maybe two walls. Hmmm.... :smug:

I'm not sure you want to do that in your own basement. I can just imagine TalkBass in the year 2017, with some old-timers posting "Remember the day that TomBowlus guy blew up his house? Man, what a way to go..."
