Shout Music Walking Basslines

Hey Guys

I see/hear these guys playing chromatic runs in gospel music like in these videos:




I am somewhat confused. Do these runs harmonize with or have any connection with chords and changes in the song? Sounds like they are just doing these chromatic walks through the entire song irrespective of what underlying chords are being played.

The "shout" is rarely played the entire song it is more of a drum and dance break normally at the end if the congregation had responded triggering the band to break into a shout. You normally would break the chord progression and just play off of the key the song is in and the bass line gives the impression of movement, especially if you start your chromatic run/walk on 4 or 5 instead 1 on the one.

It is when a church elder, music director or worship leader signals it is time to end that the band signals each other sometimes by just calling out that they are going back to the chord progression from a verse, chorus or bridge or an out'ro lick is hit signaling stop
