The BB1300 is a bit of a rare bird, it was only in production for about 12 months, and not many make it to sales channels! I have been going through the history of the Yamaha Broadbass/BB models, and as soon as I came to the BB1300, I knew that I would have to own it if it ever was to surface one for sale. But they are scarcer than hen's teeth, so I wasn't too afraid of having to flesh out anything for one. So I had a Reverb watch on BB1300, and lo and behold, one surfaced at Ishibashi a couple of weeks ago! Of course, I knew I wouldn't be able to resist it anyway, so of course I ordered it!
It arrived a week ago, and I must say that this one truly amazes me! When testing it unplugged, it was responsive and snappy, with a vibrant and lively tone to it. And plugged in, there are a lot of useful tones in it! Individual volume/tone/coil tap for each humbucker pickup, and with an additional pickup switch as well, you can dial in a few nice tones and switch to them in an instant. Neck-through, 24 frets, humbucker pickups, it's more like a crossover between a BB5000, BB3000 and the first Nathan East signature model! I've seen Yamaha ads from the 80s with Jeff Berlin in it, and the pickups and bridge pickup position resembles that of the Peavey Paladium, so who knows? Maybe Jeff was involved somehow in this transitional model?
Yamaha went a slightly different way with the BB series after the release of the Nathan East Signature model, as we know, with the BB-N, BBG, and BB40x series, before returning to the vulptous body shape of the original BBs in the BB41x, but I would like to know what role the BB1300 played in this development process, as it's truly a one of a kind BB bass.
And the one I got was 1/3 of the price of what I had to pay for my BB3000 and what you would have to flesh out for a BB5000, but in my opinion, this bass holds it's own towards either of these basses. It's on par with the BB3000, and the only Yamaha that exceeds it in my collection is the BB-NE2. I've got a BB VII, BB450, BB414, BB424, BB435, BB3000, BB-NE2 and a BB-pi (a parts BB made from various BB parts) to compare towards. They all sound sweet and play great, but there's a touch of magic to the BB1300 that is hard to beat :)
I'm very happy with my new keeper :)
