just arrived this week: Spalted Rosewood Mouse, old walnut neck

The Mouse plays and sounds great. It gives me the sensation of picking up a hollowbody telecaster and getting a huge bass sound out of it.

That is sooo sweet. the abbreviated lines are very elegant. I wonder how its tone compares to the koa topped models?

I recently acquired an MB-2 fretless--very cool instrument. (Once I figure out how to post pictures, I'll do it.)

Can somebody who has played all 3 Rob Allen models describe the differences between them in terms of tone and playability?

For example, what does the Deep 4 fretless offer beyond the MB-2? Or if you had a Deep 4, why would you also want an MB-2, other than to relieve some GAS?

Regarding a perspective on all three:

The MB2 rocks. fast, playable. singing sustain. sweet sound.

IMO the Deep is more acoustic. Not string bass...just more "air" and wonderful sustain (very different feel).

The mouse is from another planet: monster bass on a neck that allows you to play giant reaches. Once you play one you're hooked.

Everyone should own all three

the truly twisted here have put down deposits for the fourth Rob Allen bass. A vintage Fender inspired solidbody with mag pickups. I'm torn since i've been gassing for a blond Deep 5.

Well, my deposit is in for the Rob's version of the P

I've played all 3 and own a Deep 4. The MB2 is what turned me onto Rob's basses. It is an excellent bass. It's a very organic sounding instrument - much moreso than the Rick Turner Renaissance I owned at the time (IMHO of course). It's what got me to sell the Rick to consider spending the $ to get one of Rob's basses.

I just played the Mouse when I was in Seattle at Bass Northwest. That thing has some serious tone. I almost considered it but one fretless is enough.

The Deep 4 I love. Instead of getting the MB2 I got one of the first Deep 4s ever made. The electronics have since changed a bit. Rob also made the neck to my specs. This thing is an amazing bass. It's not 10x the bass the MB2 is, but it is different. Hard to explain. The MB2 is a well made bass, but the Deep 4 is that much better made - at least to me.

You can't go wrong with one of Rob's basses if it has the sound you're going for.

Seems like the Mouse30 is a favorite--anybody have it stock without upgrades?

Mine might be upgraded, but it would still be a great bass without the upgrades. I think a koa top and brazilian rosewood fingerboard will enhance the tone a bit, but you should still be able to get a great bass stock.

My Mouse is a stock version with the exception of a bound walnut headstock that matches the top. There is an unlined,ash version of it at Bass NW to tempt you.
