I have always thought Fender should do a 3 pickup J bass too (strat bass).

Would mine work? Or are you thinking of something more straty?

It just looks like routed wood. I think the picture you may be talking about is what the routed cavity looked like after he free-handed the hole, before he actually used the template to produce final shape. It's pretty clear that he freehanded the hole without using the template's edges to guide the router to get the bulk of the wood out. Then he went up against the template and began stepping the hole until he got it done.

Look at it again, look at it in proper sequence ... the "shapeless hole with white caulking" is just a freehand routing to dig out the bulk of the material. Then he began to use the template to guide the rest of the cavity routings, done in steps. There's no coating or no white caulking.

You sure you monitor is ok? You thought my black guitar was made of blue foam, and now you're talking about some kinda silicone caulking in Steve's axe. Haahaa! What's up mangs?

I think it's my monitor. Or my eyes. Or my brain. Something about irregular cuts in white wood throws me off.

I was thinking exactly of something like yours as a Fender offering. There is a builder out there who does short scale basses using strat-like bodies though.

The only thing is that I'm not a fan of that giant white thumbrest running the entire length of the body. Just kidding, I know its glare from the flash.

The sound of each pickup is determined primarily by its location. So, the MM adds high end sparkle and growl. The P is kinda in between and the far-neck is very deep and round. There is some phase cancellation as with any multi pickup arrangement, but its not excessive. Each pickup has its own voice to be sure.

Two of the basses use a Gotoh at the neck and one uses an Artec. The Gotoh tends to blend a little better and is more polite. But the Artec is easier to do surgery on and add 4 conductor wiring (you gotta be careful though - I wrecked one doing that).

No clips but my son is getting a Zoom recorder for Christmas, so I'm hoping to do a collection of clips on the Air Force Bass and the Army Guitar to post on our website. Will post here too if/when we get to that. Never done it before.

How are you liking the Babicz bridge?

It's a great bridge. I'm not sure I can actually hear a difference when plugged in (same with body wood differences), but it's great for ease of adjustment and I love the looks. Based on the design, if any bridge can improve sustain and resonance this would be the one.

No worries. And actually, it's a legitimate question. It's like my brain is trying to make sense out of something it's not recognizing, because what I'm seeing isn't what I'm expecting to see.

I don't know if you know other languages, or listen to foreign music, or anything like that, but there is a common phenomenon where you will think you hear words in English because your brain is reaching for something it recognizes. That's what happened with me visually.

I have been diagnosed with ADD, and one health care professional thinks I have mild Asperger's. I don't know about that, but my brain is wired a little differently, and I'm OK with that. Sometimes it's an advantage, sometimes it's not.

But speaking of thumb-rests, you may be interested to know that I'm planning to have wenge thumb-rests put on between the pickups. I have some wenge that is close to the pattern of my neck. I'm hoping the net effect will both look cool and be a tricky visual effect (speaking as one who appreciates tricky visual effects).

There is a guy in the UK who sells exotic wood thumbrests. I assume you will have your luthier make one, but they are really nice. I have a maple, ebony and rosewood ones.

What kind of wood is the fingerboard made of? Grain is really cool. Also, it looks like there are 4 concentric pots plus a regular one. Are there actually 9 dials on that thing? What do they all do?

Dood ... sa-WEET! What's the neck, mahogany? At first glance I thought it might be Padouk. I love Padouk necks, I leave them unfinished and they turn this great looking sortof brownish color after some time. I love how they may be left unfinished with no problems later on.

Anyhow, that is going to be one sick-ass bass very soon! Really nicely done, well thought out, innovative, a quite tasteful.
