my Samick was probably around 250 new, but I'm putting a fair amount of cash into customizing it (new pickups, preamp, bridge, knobs for now, possibly a new neck for an end of school year present) so by the end it'll probably be over the 700 limit.

I've got some bad news for you, your Samick will still be only worth $200 even after you've put all those expensive mods into it.

I bought a '74 P Bass brand new in '74...it was $330 including the hardshell case (plus tax)

Every bass I have now, except for the Hamm Urge I, cost less than $700 (I bought the Urge used for $700).

Squier P Special 5 (now fretless)...under $200 new.

MIM P Bass...$200 used.

MIM Deluxe Active J5...under $300 brand new.

Ibanez SR406A...$299 brand new.

Hoyt/Warmoth 5 string J type bass with custom made 35 in. scale neck and EMGs...way under $700. (I bought it without electronics and added them after this picture was taken.)

bought this one in buenos aires for 180$ with an SKB hard shell case, KLM crashed my case and i got a refund for 140$ so it's 40$ for the bass.
i took the finish down because it was crap, and bought pickups and bridge for 67$ from EBAY, paid 45 $ for a the luthier to give her a finish, install the bridge and pickups.
total : 152$.
