Compound radius means it's a different radius at the headstock end vs the body end, Ted. Here's a graphic from Warmoth that shows their compound radius. A smaller radius at the headstock end is supposed to be more comfortable while a flatter radius at the body end eliminates fretting out during string bends.

thanks! mr. thor says its harder to epoxy this sort of neck.

I hadn't realized Rob did necks that way (could it just be the fretted models?) Do the current fretless basses come this way? I'm not too sure I could tell by playing a compound neck. To me RA necks just feel "good"

I agree, they just feel good. I looked closely at the fingerboard on my MB-2 5 string fretless last night and couldn't tell. It does look a bit flat towards the body end but didn't look very different at the headstock end by eye.

The job hasn't been easy (turns out Rob's bass necks have a compound radius) but the result is gorgeous. I'm not sure what wood this is...but wow!

Will post results when the neck gets back and the bass is re-assembled.

I recently purchased a used RA MB-2 that came in a gig bag, and want to purchase a hard case to protect my investment. Has anyone has found another good fit in terms of hard cases, like Gator or SKB? I'm finding it hard to justify laying out $225 for a case until I get a RA compatible amp.

I'm sure there are some compatible cases, but you'll need to try them out at shops if they have them. Rob's cases are a little expensive, but there's no substitute for a case that's 100% form fitted to his basses.

As for amps, what budget/size? My Ampeg SVT4Pro to a 4x10 and 1x15 does the job quite well, but it was a struggle to find a small amp that had the low end thump. I settled on a Phil Jones Super Flightcase. There are plenty of small amps that are loud, but few with a pillowy warm thump.

I use an acoustic image contra with my mouse for that pillowy thump, but it's a really a question of what kind of sound dispersion one prefers

I'm sure there are others, but after trying everything in town, I was happy that the PJB worked. The only thing that came close was the SWR Strawberry Blonde, but it had almost no power. There were plenty of loud small amps, but I wanted something with TONE, not just volume. :D

Interestingly enough, the PJ Flightcase is currently at the top of my list for amps. The AI amps are my second choice. Gotta get the gig money saved up, though.

As far as the cases go, the case that I've been using for my fender is fairly close, but needs a pair of heavy socks to fill an empty space.

i love the phil jones briefcase. for gigs i've been using an acoustic image clarus with bergantino 1x12's or Accugroove Tri110's. I like the hi-fi approach for the Rob Allens.

Deep five and blondie (pre-lined neck transplant) with my Tiki Bar friendly one-of-a-kind tweed Phil Jones Briefcase.

Rob suggests periodic treating with carnuba wax.

Can anyone suggest a brand suitable for a bass? An employee at my local hardware store warned me off their stock--he said they all had solvents and additives that might negatively effect fine wood.

I"m sure Rob can suggest something.

So does anyone else use their Rob Allen as their main bass ? I have a few other really nice fretless basses that I play and want to use at gigs but I always grab my Mouse to play.

Here's my Mouse. Posted it before but just love this bass.
