I eyeball it, but carefully. Put some masking tape strips down where the screws might go, measure distance to be equal on each side, and dot with a marker. Leave tape on so as to reduce chipping chances, drill just enough to start the screws (usually pickguard screws are fine), remove tape, check again, and drill.
