Yes, I've heard that also - just like todays poly's are much improved. In order to get a coating that is 'open' for wear, I developed a DIY hybrid using different products. I first shoot an enamel rattle-can primer (as in, white Cover Stain) and then an enamel colour coat(s) applied thin, and finally a satin clear nitro. If every stage stays thin/light - it acquires player wear a bit more quickly.
Just picked up this Fender Custom Shop Nocaster. I just had it authenticated by Fender Custom Shop, but this "distressed finish" did NOT come from the factory. I think it was someone on TB that coined it as "The Angry Girlfriend" Finish!

bought used, by me, already stripped down natural.
The pickups were dead, sent them to a guy named Lindy Frallin(sp?).
Also put on a hip shot.
The Fender decal on the headstock was strange too.
Faded white paint, but where the Fender should be,was much brighter white paint, but no decal. Weird.
Love the BMW’s. I used to have an old red R80RT. Fun bikes.
Lindy Fralin. He’s a three hour drive over in Richmond. I’ve never personally used his pickups but they sure sound great.
The BMW’s are fun. Took me a short 20 minutes ride to cross the Bay Bridge in rush hour traffic and never needed to worry about parking.

I have a set - they sound great! I've crossed the Bay Bridge on my VFR in rush hour(s) many times - just gotta be 100% lane splitting. And crossing the GGB on a bicycle is the most dangerous part of any ride to the other side. Tourists taking pics with their iPhones while riding toward you, cyclists passing in your lane coming toward you... I love it but damn if it's not 100% alert when doing so.
I don’t do motorcycles for this very reason but I can say, having to still drive in ‘the Bay” for essential reasons it is nice to have traffic scaled back to what seems like late 80’s levels. Traffic has been steadily ramping back up over the last few weeks and I’m sure it will continue. I do hope it’s a good sign.
The 3 tone sunburst '58 (most likely) P reminded me of this - pulled these pics from one of the Facebook groups but this is one of my ex-basses. I bought it from Norm Harris (maybe 1990 or '91) and sold it a few years later through Real Guitars. Patrick Dahlheimer from the band LIVE bought it and used it with that band. He sold it since and the current owner posted it.
It's a '58. Still with 'raised A' pickup.

Beautiful bass and nice bit of history. Love the wear on this, particularly on the guard near the E side of the neck. A favorite spot to anchor the when playing. Do you play off the heal of the neck?
I like playing in that position and gigged the bass quite a bit but that wear predated me
It's in very similar condition now as when I bought it.

Yes, when it’s bumper to bumper splitting the line was the way to go, and you have to be on your game. I would not attempt it today as I just don’t have the reflexes but 90-92 was a different story.
I didn't start motorcycling until the mid-'90s. Read all Keith Codes books and did one of his track days at Laguna Seca on my '93 VFR750F and a couple more open track days since. Bought it with 6k on the clock (break-in miles) and when I sold it a few years back it had almost 100k on it, and was still going strong. Being a life-long cyclist and 25yr vet racer (road/track) my reactions have always been pretty keen and I keep them sharp. If there comes a day when I doubted that 'spidy-sense' - I'll sell the VFR. (but never my bicycle!)
Yep, traffic has been really acceptable during this time. Unfortunately I've had a couple 'life' things from the early part of this year prevent me from getting out as much as I'd like on the bikes, but when I did it was refreshing not to have so many cars on the road. Speaking of bicycles, a fringe benefit of this time is that I see a lot more people of all stripes riding bikes. The Bay Area has always been a a bike riding meca, but more average-looking people are on bikes now doing grocery-shopping or leading a small family ride!. That will not end because once that seed's planted - people realize how good it is for them to ride a bike and bike shops are doing bust-up biz!
Man, that '50s P with lipstick pickups is stupid cool.
