The back story for that big wear part by the E string below the pick guard is that the original owner played with a big watch on and used a pick. The constant moving of his wrist created a divet. You can't really see it in the pic but it is a nice little gouge he put it in.

I recently reacquired my previously-owned 1981 G&L L-2000 Series-E, so I snapped a few cell pics:
She's a MONSTER tonally, and nice and lightweight for the era as well at around 8.5-9 lbs somewhere.

I got that from Tom Murphy of Gibson, he uses a razor, although after a lot of practice I found that a sewing needle works a little better for me.
I'm not sure I'll ever do this again however, as it is very time consuming and IMO there's better ways to check a finish either by freezing the body and heating it up at a rapid rate or by adjusting the ratios of the finish itself.
I kinda like the burnt look over a natural finish which is funny being that when I originally saw Larry Hartke do this I didn't much care for it but on natural I like it.
I have been playing my Squier CV P bass because I just never liked the look and finish of my BB, although it has an amazing sound and action.
Now it looks great and I am just loving it.
