Not so crazy - that isn't the original bridge - it would have threaded barrels. That one is probably from the 70s or 80s (single slot barrels) - which makes the whole "put away in the 70s" story a bit fishy..

Still cool looking!

I'm not historian, my knowledge about vintage Fenders is too small, and it's not my bass/website etc,..but AFAIK, I think threaded barrels for P-Bass bridge started at 1957. A 1958 bass like one above might originally have the old stock 'non threaded' ones like in the photo.

The non-threaded-barrel bridges in the 50s were 2 saddle barrels -- they each held two strings.

I'm pretty sure they didn't ship with a plastic film either, but I could be wrong.

To my amateur eye, the rest looks fairly legit - and either way, cool looking wear and tear! That bass has a story, for sure.

Yep, I could be wrong too LOL..Anyway, The joy of watching the beautiful basses pics (and sharing them) is far more important for me than it's correct (historical) value etc, at least if it's in this thread :D

When I raised the PUs to improve tone/output, with aggressive playing the strings would hit the polepieces, making that metallic chunk noise o' doom.
Was before a gig, so put the tape there short term to help with the noise- worked well enough to just leave it there.

Sorry I don't have a more interesting story.. ;)

it is interesting LOL, but why don't you readjust the PU again?

If I lower it, I don't really like the sound of it, plus then I'd have to lower the back one to balance their output, and then it just turns into work. :D

Combine that with the fact that the look doesn't really bother me, and here we are.

The plastic covering is a real mystery - I've never seen that before and seems like for whatever reason someone did that after the fact, but aside from that it's not a stretch to believe the orig bridge was swapped out for this later version. When I bought my '66 it had this same switched-out bridge. (sans plastic!) That bass was played a lot! (frets are shot!)

...as a side note, does anyone have this issue w/the type shrinking sometimes as you enter script? It occurs now and then and on different computers so I wonder if it's a tb program bug.

The font has done that on me too (only on my ipad tho - and normal browser, not tapatalk). And it has changed languages while I was typing too, like all of a sudden I'm typing in Arabic or something!

!!! wow - I guess I'm lucky just to have the font size change! I thought it was my new MacBook Pro, but then my older PowerBook G4 did it, so I figured it was tb because it never happens anywhere else. Thanks for the confirmation. I'm going to contact the grand pooch's here at tb to let them know.
