I used to have a 50's King Mortone plywood violin-shaped upright. It was smaller than a 3/4 and had a sweet tone. Wish I still had it but that's another story…

Mine's a Romanian shop bass, fully carved. Same period, I'd imagine, and on the small end of being a 3/4. It's ridiculously loud and very full, with amazing growl, loves guts! You wouldn't think such a loud tone could come from such a small bass. I love it to bits (which is how I found it!)

I do although my technique has changed a bit over time. I've moved my hand further back so when I used my thumb, my hand is resting more on the bridge. Other times to reproduce a similar tone as the thumb, I'm placing my thumb on the E string side of the neck and plucking with my figures over the bottom of the fretboard or close to the bottom.

Yes! Please post all and any instruments with player wear (like PENLIYL's recent upright pic) tb has all the categories separating uprights/doubles from electric bass guitars - but they're all distressed instruments here! I have a book INSTRUMENT [Chronicle Books 2011 - photos by Pat Graham] - which is a picture book of player-worn instruments; mostly guitars & basses, but also synthesizers, organs, amps, and pedals owned/played by people like Nels Cline, Johnny Marr, Peter Buck, Jerry Dammers, Jeff Tweedy, Steve Albini, John Doe, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon to name only a few. Pretty cool book worth checking out if this thread appeals to you!

Yes, it is the Titanic violin - pretty amazing to think about - there's a story there that instrument could tell if it could talk.

Here you go, first the violin:

I was given this one. I don't play violin, but it's a very nice example and perfect for learning how to build one!

Here's my main bass, I only have a double and two BGs (both rubbish) and I'm really blessed to have this bass. It's truly an astounding instrument, I constantly get comments on how great it sounds (and plays, which is nice as I set it up!).

Note the 'Pig and Clare' tattoo, scratched crudely around the c-bout. Also note the edges worn to the ribs, the several cracks (all repaired) including the neck that snapped in half! Also note the missing corner and, of course, the homemade quiver. I think it's pretty 'mojo'ish, anyway

That thing has mojo to spare. You might need a separate container of some sort to carry it all. Don't let that beauty do all the lifting.

Double basses are filled w/"mojo", especially if they are centuries old. The size of them alone promotes their wear, many bruises and repairs over time.

'Tis the truth, that's why I love DB so much! They're big, cumbersome, limited tonally, and yet they make the best sound in the world, and I love trying to make my way around such a behemoth of a design

Man, that's gorgeous! This is one of my dream basses, I remember as a teen drooling over the Precision Special ads in early-80's Guitar Player magazines and dreaming of owning one. But that dream will never come true as I play left handed, AFAIK Fender never made any lefty Precision Specials, I've never seen one or even heard of one.
