Right on. Wishing you all a wonderful time together.So, it's been about a year since my old boy Loki passed on, and I did not have any plans to have another dog, I really thought I was done.
But my wife of 45 years has reminded me, about ten times in the last month, that the Austin Animal Center currently has five buildings full to the brim with dogs in their kennels and any dogs willing to have a roommate are doubled up. In addition, they have dogs in crates in the offices, hallways, and their conference room.
I finally agreed to visit the shelter and took about 30 dogs out to walk/play over three days, most of them Pitties because the large majority there are Pitbull or Pit mix.
Found some that I think would have been a good fit, but my wife really wanted smaller and less "proper Pitbull" looking.
All three that I liked best were very nice, each needed a little work but all three were block-headed, muscled up and heavier.
We hike in the woods a lot and play a lot of disc golf so getting a dog that could go with us leash free and not scare anybody would be awesome.
She looked at the various dogs that are staying in foster homes and one of them looked identical to our daughter's 13 year old Pittie girl.
We went and met this little guy (50 pounds) and he looks petite enough and is a pretty mellow fellow compared to many.
He had to be put in foster quickly because he was not doing well at the shelter at all, he wouldn't come out of his crate, he was just totally shut down.
He needs a little work to build his confidence and the lady that was fostering him had not really helped him with her very quiet lifestyle.
My wife fell in love just from the pictures and after meeting him I thought he would work out well.
In the eight or nine days we've had him he has been on a number of leash free hikes in the woods and he walks right at my heel leash free when I ask him to.
He has also been out on two rounds of disc golf, the second time he was off leash the whole time and he did fantastic.
The foster had a doggie door so we are working on house training him to let us know when he's gotta go out.
He is getting a lot of human contact and meeting people and dogs which is helping him be more confident, stable and secure.
So, I'm in love again, I'm a total pushover for a dog that needs a little help.

Just like my three when I go out to run errands. When I return, o matter how much and what I've got in my hands, the VERY first thing that has to happen is giving them their welcome home treat. It's the only time my senior guy (Sparky, 15, a poodle/Jack Russell mix) barks. Always startles me. He has such a loud, deep bark for such a little white dog.
