The long hair is deaf and blind since birth. The short hair is the only survivor of a litter she birthed that was not killed at birth by their sire. I don't know what would possess someone to breed a dog in her condition but I'm glad I met the pups and not the individual who subjected her to such treatment. Her son is very protective of his mom and stays right with her constantly. He's a good boy and loves to play but if he thinks she is in distress he will fearlessly meet that threat. I've seen him go off on a grown Golden Retriever who was playing, but getting a little too mouthy with his mom.
And no need to feel sorry for her, she has adapted beautifully to the crappy hand she was given. She is a sassy and very happy example of why I prefer the company of animals over humans most times. I always take her outside to run around in a sea of new and exciting smells any time I visit her adoptive family. She is indeed a very special little girl.
