Oh man. Cancer sucks. On Friday we said goodbye to Kona. He was a truly wonderful hound. Would have been 11 Dec 21.
In July we amputated a rear leg. We were hoping that we caught Osteo Sarcoma before it spread. We went through 2 rounds of chemo. On the third his red cell count was too low. Mass growing at his spleen. Nodules developing in his lungs. Frick... damned Osteo Sarcoma moves fast. Very invasive.

Last Monday, I took him in as he was having GI problems. The vet pumped him full of fluids and a few drugs, GI seemed fine. Yay Solid Poops!

Tues he bounced around like a typical 3 legged Golden knucklehead. He never really lost the silly puppy thing that Goldens have.

Wednesday he stopped eating - for a Golden not to eat is a siesmic event. After 2.5 days of not eating or sleeping, we had an at home visit for hospice, end of life. The vet was great. Lots of tears all around. His little brother and cat were able to investigate and maybe that helps them process his absence better.

I think it was less stressful for Kona to go in his home and when you find yourself there, if there is a mobile hospice vet availble, it's an option to consider.

Awww man, I'm so sorry for your loss. I've enjoyed seeing pics of Kona for years, seems like he was a great pup in a loving home.

@GregC Thanks, Kona was a lovely hound. Well loved. He also earned 'Elite' in scent work. He and my wife partnered in scent work for 6 years. Kona started late but he was a very intelligent, adaptable and sensitive creature.

This is what we sign up for when we get the little fur balls... doesn't make it suck less but it is good knowing that I have other dog crazy brothers (and sisters) there.

@4Mal , I am so sorry. I've been through this too many times, and know how awful it is. Kudos for having the vet come to the house. I did the same thing when I had to have my beloved Weimaraner euthanized. My thoughts and prayers are with you...

So sorry to learn that you have lost your best friend Kona. It is never easy when this happens. All we can do is be grateful for the good times and that we gave them the best life possible.
