Show Your Wood Pick Guard Bass

I have grown to really dig the look of a wood pick guard. I have two right now:

A P bass with a Jazz neck and a rosewood print guard with a custom rosewood thumb-rest

and a Cabronita with a super thin veneer (made for die cut machines) with a few coats of Tru-oil

I suppose I should mention that the guard is made from spalted maple.

Gotta say the flame maple pickguard suits the bass very well!

I love those. The spalted maple has great figure to it and that that burst on the flame maple is neat. I have been wanting to do a sort of transparent antigua like that.

Found this Peavey Patriot on Craigslist for $50. It had a really bad walnut stain job covering up the Ash body. Sanded it down and did a Tru Oil finish and built a pickguard out of Purpleheart. I think it looked much better and was very happy with the result. I ended up trading it in on a Tiger Eye Cirrus, which I ended up selling. I kind of wish I had kept the Patriot and the Cirrus for that matter! Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.

Found this Peavey Patriot on Craigslist for $50. It had a really bad walnut stain job covering up the Ash body. Sanded it down and did a Tru Oil finish and built a pickguard out of Purpleheart. Never thought of a pick guard for her hmmmmm this looks great is that pick guard a copy off another guard or did you have to do a brand new costum job?

How long did it take to get off all the stain I thought stain went really deep in there ?

Hey, the guard and thumbrest on the P came with it when I bought the body. I think you can get the guard from pickguardian and I am not sure who made the thumbrest. I actually traded that bass away. I miss it.

It is a cherry veneer. No stain, just tru-oil.

I loves me some Tru-Oil. I use it about 95% of the time now for finishing necks and bodies.

Never thought of a pick guard for her hmmmmm this looks great is that pick guard a copy off another guard or did you have to do a brand new costum job?

I just traced the original pick guard and cut it out, sanded and tru oiled the purple heart. I cut it out using a spiral bit in my Dremel. I don't know if my bits were dull, but it took a lot to cut it out and I used 2 different bits.

It wasn't too bad getting the stain sanded down. There were a couple of darker areas, but for a $50 bass I didn't let it bother me too bad. I used a palm sander and hand sanding to, I think, 800 grit.
