Double Bass Shure KSM353

Howdy folks,

I've recently acquired a KSM353 for my studio. I don't think I would ever take this mic out on a gig, but supposedly it was built to do so. I just think it is too expensive to do that not to mention the weight. Anyway, I started putting it on some sources to see what it sounds like.

Here is a really short sample using 5 instruments you see in this picture (not the drums though):

It's really loose, because I am rusty, but you will get an idea of the overall sound of the mic as the sources stack. I put a little delay on some of the instruments to make space for everything. I'm talking 1-4ms slightly varied on each side of the stereo return channel, 1 per instrument, except the double bass. Filtered the delay to pass above 5-600hz, sometimes way higher so to not interfere with the body sound of the mics and blended really really low in the mix. I bypassed and checked to make sure it didn't alter the sonics so you could hear what was actually recorded but have a tiny stereo field. No processing except for the dash of delay. Signal chain: KSM353->Pendulum Audio MDP1->Lynx converters.

Nice mic. I'm really beginning to like it. It's so mellow on the bass and accurate. The mic was placed a foot away pointing at the bridge but slightly off axis toward an ff.

The tambourine sound amazes me. I've recorded so many of them over the years and the one I have here is a piece of junk, really. I find it really musical and I actually like listening to it! A few other observations is the attack on everything is, well, smooth. In a normal mix I find myself putting a lot of acoustics, close mic mind you, through a compressor with a gentle slope at the signal peak to soften them so the apparent body of the instrument and harmonic content is better revealed and to sit them in a mix. This is really fascinating to me because I haven't had this caliper of a ribbon mic in here before. Big eye opener. I plan on using it through some other gear with different impedances to see what comes out of it. Really interested what it does with the mindprint dtc as the impedance is 5kΩ whereas the MDP1 is 1.5KΩ. Should have some interesting findings.
 
The mic sounds great in this usage. I love the idea of ribbon miss, and I love the way they sound when someone who knows what to do with them is at the controls. In my own hands, dealing with the bi-directional figure 8 pattern on any mic either made or set this way is a total crapshoot and very room/placement dependent. I think if you were to use the mic in a room you knew well and where you had already identified the sweet spot for figure 8 recording, it could be fantastic.

Thanks for the kind remarks. All I did in the days after my original post is put this mic through its paces. I have to know its qualities in order to use it best. I've found going through the Mindprint DTC to really extend the HF detail but at the same time it seemed to scoop out the mids. Through a JLM Audio TMP8 (600Ω), the mids come more forward and the sound would most likely better cut a mix. The lows sounded tighter too. Overall with the TMP8, it was similar to the MDP1 but with more mid focus. Going through a Universal 610 preamp, it was the richest sounding of the bunch. I cant remember the exact details, but I know I didn't prefer it and moved on rather quickly. The 610, however, was a great DI with an underwood I recorded a while back. The player did have a Fdeck.

Anyway, Chris,

I don't know if you know this, but you can damper the opposite lobe of of an 8 to cut room ambiance/bleed. There is no doubt, especially in small rooms, room modes and reflections can wreak havoc.

Being real close to your source can help a lot too in live situations with the downfall of proximity. (I know, preaching to the choir!) I don't think I have a way to get the 353 under the bridge like folks are doing with the Troll mic. The 353 is way too heavy for an h-clamp IMO. Maybe a "Mic on a Stick". Another option would be to use a low-impedance preamp with the mic so the high-frequency detail is lessened. Lots of ways to skin a cat. In all, the 353 isn't a game changer for me live, at least in the joints I play in, as the EAP blend with a AT450 is a very flexible combo to work with a good or problematic room.

If anyone wants, I can post a few samples of the other preamps used in my testing. Just let me know and I will after I finish doing my January once-over on my tube equipment. I will most likely re-record them and keep my bass in the stand to remove all variables even though I was very conscious of the setup details as I did my initial tests.

Thanks! Didn't know this and will experiment with this concept using several variable pattern miss I have lying around.
