Shuttle 6.0 Volume issue

Jeff Genzler responded within 12 hours to my email. That guy just really impresses me! Anyway, he advised that a little de-oxit in the volume pot will solve the problem. I followed that direction and the problem is gone! Just pop the top off the amp and squirt one brief shot in the hole in the pot, which is easily visible from birds-eye once the lid is off.

No amp should have an inherent scratchy pot problem. De-oxit is easy to use and wonderfully effective. It is pricey, but at $15 for a 5 oz can, you probably will not need to replace it anytime soon unless you run a very busy shop!

I will let you guys know if the de-oxit in the effects loop jacks helps the volume drop-out problem. I am also going to apply it to the bypass switch on the pedal, as well as the in and out jacks on my compressor pedal.
 
My Eden does the same if it sits for a while. Both Gain & Master.
Fix? With the amp off, turn your control left & right all the way
and repeat for several times and also try de-oxit.
I never turn my master up while playing.
I always give myself some extra on the bass volume. Leave it at 8 then turn up if needed.
 
3 gigs and a rehearsal and it seems the problem is gone. De-Oxit worked right away on the scratchy pot and also seems to have solved the volume cut problem. 2 big gigs next weekend so I will check back in after those additional 3 sets at full stage volume to let everyone know if the amp is still working fine.
 
So had my 2 "big" gigs, meaning the amp was driving the full 4ohm stack (2cabs) for 3 full sets per gig. Pre-amp gain and volume at 2:00, master volume at noon. No cut outs whatsoever. My fingers are crossed in the hopes that the De-Oxit solution will hold!

That is very strange. Andy (the Genz engineer) has posted many times that the design of that master volume will result in 'noise' when turned while actually playing. Every Genz head I've owned and/or played had this issue, similar to the Eden heads that used the same 'articulated pots'. If you are getting a volume drop-off, something else strange going on with that head (although a dirty effects loop could definitely be the issue).

That being said, hopefully the cleaning of the effects loop takes care of your issue... sounds like it did!

Also, I applied De-Oxit to the jacks on my BBE Opto-Stomp, which is the lone pedal in my effects loop. Since I did both fixes at the same time, no way to know if the culprit was the amp effects loop or the pedal... Easy enough to squirt both while I was at it, so that was my solution.

It is a great head. I keep waiting for it to blow up on louder gigs, figuring how could something so small and light weight possibly push both my cabs at full stage volume! Silly me!!!!
 
Funny, I never saw this thread. Search seems not to be terribly reliable in highlighting all threads.

Anyway, let me clarify a few things since there are some inaccurate assumptions being made.

1. There should be no noise when rotating controls with no signal present. Any noise that can be heard is generally the result of a microscopic oxide or contaminate on the surface of the resistive element (lots of this is environmental depending on where in the country or world you live) and generally a very tiny amount of Caig D-5 sprayed inside the control (really, a tiny amount is all you need, more can cause other problems) will solve this permanently. The D-5 breaks this contaminate and coats the element with a conductive microscopicly thin protective film. If this does not solve the problem, the control must be replaced. Do not use anything other than Caig D-5, most other products that appear to be the same do not work well and many will damage the control's element and severely reduce it's lifespan. In this case, all of the controls will need to be replaced.

2. With signal present, there may be some noise when turning the controls (specifically the gain and volume controls) because of microscopic bumps that cause the gain to change in audible variations. What you are hearing is the instantaneous step changes, and with a bass signal these are harmonics that are much more audible. If you were to use full range music, the masking effect of the higher frequency program would mask most of this. Detented controls show this effect more than smooth controls because of the mechanical transmission of the detent through the wiper and element. The best fix for this is also a tiny spray of Caig D-5 into the controls, but it works for a different reason by lubricating the wiper element as it's contact surface passes over the microscopic surface. Generally, this problem gets BETTER with use, as the wiper and element burnish smooth.

3. Effects return jack's internal normalling switch is another, entirely different issue that is responsible for intermittent signal with all manufacturer's products that use this signal routing option. Since the switches are open, they are subject to dirt, dust, spider web (yes, spiders seem to like these jack holes a lot), and environmental corrosion (especially those of you in marine environments). This also is best cleaned with Caig DeOxit D-5. On our amps, the orientation of the jacks are such that you need to turn the amp upside down and spray a small amount into the jack and cycle the jack with a plug. The only jacks that need this would be the return jacks, the send jacks do not have the switch used.

Hope this helps clarify, and avoid any costly misapplication of otherwise well intended advice.

I think I got lucky and was mostly compliant with Agedhorse's instructions even though I had not yet read them. I did not turn the unit upside down. I tried to use very little D5. That stuff really works amazingly well, by the way. I am subscribed to this thread so I will post again if I have any further problems. Thanks for the help!
