Sight Reading Music like the Real Book?

I have been enrolled in the sight-reading courses at TalkingBass and I LOVE THEM! I am looking for musical books/resources that I can start to dig into to improve my ability to sight-read and to improve my musicianship. Like great walking bass lines or an into to Jazz bass.

Musically, I am somewhat intermediate. I just want to continue to push myself while having fun with sight-reading. I figure that if I am having fun I will become faster/more accurate with my reading than I currently am. But I may not be ready for some of the more serious jazz standards in the Real Book? Welcome all input!

My favorite reccomend action for intermediate reading is Oscar Stangoro's Latin Bass Book, especially if rhythm is a weak point.

If you want to read some classical excerpts, I recommend you go to a school band music store and pick up the trombone All-State tryout material. Chance are good it’s still the Rubank Excerpts Book.

The real book will only have the melody and the chords. They don’t transcribe walking bass line. So ...

but: the real book + 2-3 great jazz players will certainly improve your playing! good luck with it!

There's stuff like the Aebersold series where they transcribed people like Ron Carter's walking lines on various (dubiously named) standards.
Still, +1 for the real book, I'll sightread song heads over walking lines any day of the week!

Reading walking lines is going to be rhythmically static so I would consider something With greater rhythmic variation. Whatever you decide on, make sure the book is spiral bound (there’s nothing worse than trying to sight read from a “perfect bound” book).
