Double Bass Sight-reading

Hello all!

I've decided to work on my sight reading, which I believe is very sub-par compared to other aspects of a typical audition (scales, prepared etudes, etc.) I bought a book long ago titled "Develop Sight Reading" by Gaston Dufresne, which is a great book in the beginning, but begins to incorporate allot of tenor clef near the 10th or so exercise. I'm not too good with playing in tenor clef, and it isn't really an important aspect of playing at the level I'm currently at. I'm looking for a good, affordable method for sight reading with little or no tenor clef. Not necessarily a book, but something that's more affordable than buying a bunch of literature and playing it all.

You could try an etude book, like Sturm or Storch-Hrabe, and just read through a different etude every day. At some point, you will want to work through these etudes the way you would any technical exercise, but for this purpose, you should just go straight through it without stopping. You could do the same thing with some orchestral excerpts.

Hello all!

Do you know what you need to work on (sight-reading rhythms, fingerings, high positions, etc.)? A couple of years ago, I wanted to work on my rhythm sight-reading, so I bought a couple of Latin bass playalong books. They helped!

if you're planning on being a serious classical bassist, learning tenor clef is absolutely necessary. it's annoying at first, but well worth the time.
