I singed a recored deal! A record contract but not a recording contract. I am not even in the band anymore. None of us are. It was was all 35 years ago! It seems there is a market for new un heard music from the 80's by metal fans who do not like current metal trends or are curious about the stuff everyone missed. It's a real label too based in Greece. World wide distro. They fronted all the money for everything and while we only get a token amount to cash and some CD's the contract does not ask us to make up for any lack of sales. Probably because already recorded music is being used. I am ok with it, we all were except for the one player who is a semi pro now. He was a little concerned about giving our music away but relaxed when I told him the CD run is limited. The company is really going all out in it's promotion even had the release reviewed already. Taking pre orders and everything. YouTube promo videos, the works.

I walk around town and when I run into people I know as a Joke I ask them if they want my autograph LOL Some of them don't believe a word I tell them about my album being released March 28th hahaha. They think I am full of baloney! And I can't blame them I look nothing like a rock star anymore.

It took 35 years. Am I am accomplished bass player now? Or was I already? Hard to tell. But never surrender and keep all your recordings in good condition. I was the only one with access to what was needed to get the project done. Most people lose this stuff or it gets damaged at some point and it's lost to history. Another reason I did it. I knew the tapes were goin to degrade someday and be lost. I was worried I'd sent them the only copies anyone knows of and something would happen that I would not get it back and nothing would be released so I took a chance.

dont feel so bad , my old band made an album in the 80's, european distro only..didn't see a dime, dunno how many were sold, producer was a thief, bumming cigs off me every 5 minutes during session.... The contract expired, then album get's picked up by a digital label for re-release recently....made a few bucks on that (700 a piece for a 3 members, whoopie!!)) but the band has long since broke up in the early 90's

It's an interesting phenomenon how many tiny labels all over the world have gotten into reissues of "lost masterpieces". At some point every recording ever made will be reissued

It has been known for European labels or a label that operates through Europe to put the money up for the recording and produce a limited run and then the act tours off the back of that. They often front the tours too.
Upside is sidemen make decent gigging money from decent shows or festivals etc.
The main writer ..often solo frontman makes money from re sells, gigs and anything left from recording costs.

Obviously need a viable product in the first place..or in this case, it appears the distro has spotted a market and is willing to back that..

Lol I'd avoid that. A few around here do it that and are considered a joke. It doesn't even get them many decent gigs but they play that card everytime.

It happens. Ive got a friend who's a drummer. in the mid 90s he was in an interesting sorta acoustic hardcore band that was kind popular locally but never really went anywhere. Years later he was watching TV and found himself humming along to the background music, only to realize it was his music! He didn't own rights to material so he didn't know their old recordings had been licensed and were being used as soundtrack stuff for TV.

Rock Star?! LOL I call my band mates that now in messages as a joke too. Glad to hear I am not the only one in this situation. That's not bad money at least. Maybe the recording I was on will get picked up by another label too. Who knows. At least it will exist after our deaths and who know 100 years from now I might be famous.
