Silly fretboard question - Why aren't they painted?

Laughing apart....if there is a noticeable difference in tone between lacquered and oiled body finishes...oiled being woodier and lacquered being harder sounding....then how much more of a difference for a lacquered or painted fret board? The fret board wood is probably the biggest contributor to a bass' inherent tonal stamp. So it will change the tone a bit.
