All other things being equal, I would pick between two sets of strings to get either silk (preferred) vs no silk, or to get a preferred color of silk.
I would like to think that I would not pick a string that I did not like only because of the silk. It does seem perhaps curious that my favorite-sounding strings tend to also be those that have silk. Coincidence? Or am I being subconsciously swayed?
No, but I could imagine doing it, provided the strings were at least decent. I generally support making decisions based on colors. Why not?
While my memory on this is a little fuzzy, for awhile I think I had purple silks on my strings, which matched my purple woven instrument cable. I found a photo of pink silks when I was using the purple cable, which was cool too--except that both colors clashed with the bass!
I like red silk, such as La Bella 760FL, Thomastik JF344, Rotosound RS66, RS77, and RS99. All of them are good-sounding strings, too, but I've always picked Rotosound RS66 over the longer-lived RS55, partly because of cost and initial brightness, partly because I can't stand the green silk of the 55.
I can stand a black or blue silk, too, such as the shorter-scale versions of La Bella 760 and Rotosound 77. I wish they could come in red, though.
I just changed the pickguard on my P-bass to better match the surf-green silks on the Fender flats I've got on it. Felt a little silly doing all that un-screwing and screwing back in purely for aesthetic purposes, but hey, part of what I like about basses is how they look. And my P-bass is looking rad.
Yes. I wanted to try some different strings for my new Atelier Z. Had a fresh set of NYXLs laying around but did not want the coloured ball ends visible (would show up on this bass) so I looked at alternatives. Was able to get some Sadowsky Blue nickels for a good price, love the strings. And also thought the blue silks would look great which they do. Gonna try blue SS and then the blacks after
