Silly Question??

Before recently replacing strings, I removed pups to replace the foam in the cavities (Fender JB).
Since then, I've significantly changed the pick-up adjustment and now have a sound which I much prefer. Consequently, the foam needs further work to provide even support as the pickups are basically floating on the high side.
The question: is there anything to be mindful of in re-reinstalling the current strings?

The only drawback of the floating PU's is that they can accidentally be pushed into the cavity. Still, I would get a sponge and cut it to size making sure it has a little bit of push against the pickups. Then make sure they aren't too close to the strings to avoid touching while plucking.

I mean, it sounds to me like the pickups were slightly raised up by the new foam which in turn made the output louder because they pickups are now closer to the strings...

If everything is sitting correctly and the bass plays fine now, I would say there's nothing to worry about. But if you have unbalanced and or unreliable foam under the pickups, I'd remedy that ASAP. It will become an issue at some point.

Since your question about string installation and not your pickup adjustment... The thing to be sure of when reinstalling used strings is that they go back on the same they were taken off. No twisting off the string and don't bend anything in an opposite direction to a previous bend. Since they are going on the same instrument they were removed from, this shouldn't be too difficult.

But, if you notice any strange sounds after reinstallation, the string is probably twisted.

Changing strings shouldn't chane your pickup heights at all, if that's what you're asking. If the pickups are loose and don't get enough pressure from underneath because you raised them, just use thicker foam.

I'm not sure you need to fully remove the strings in order to remove and adjust the pickups. It'd be easier to work in that area sure but, can't you loosen them enough to work around them?

On basses where there are no strings strung through the body, I often just remove the bridge with the strings still strung through the tail and set the whole thing aside as a unit to preserve the tuner post windings and saddle break angles etc.

If you have a bridge with a quick release tail, this isn't necessary.

When bringing the strings back up to tension, I pull on each string from the tuner toward the bridge to allow the ball end to rotate freely as the string is tightened. This helps keep the string from twisting out of plane during tensioning, which can affect it's sound and length of sustain. This is especially important with flatwounds.

After a suggestion from someone here I now have them adjusted so the neck pup is high on treble side and low on bass: bridge pup is the opposite. Consequently I need to add more packing beneath the high sides as they are floating.

After a suggestion from someone here I now have them adjusted so the neck pup is high on treble side and low on bass: bridge pup is the opposite. Consequently I need to add more packing beneath the high sides as they are floating.

Only if they are loose and have some flop to them.

I'm not sure you need to fully remove the strings in order to remove and adjust the pickups. It'd be easier to work in that area sure but, can't you loosen them enough to work around them?
