you can slam me all you want, but Smells Like Teen Spirit has a solid bass line for what it is trying to do. Any other bassline in that song simply would not fit.

Well, if you're going to say, "Highway to Hell", then why not include, "Who Made Who"? I'd also want to include Free's, "Alright Now".

I'm trying to think of classic lines where you could play nothing but the bass line and everyone would know what song you were playing...and you did say simple. I don't know about Day Tripper...not the easiest.

I don't know if Mongoloid fits here, it is obviously the musical center of the song. I actually LOVE the electric guitar playing on that song - DEVO friggin' rules. BAMBOO BIMBO!!!! I come up the river with my LASER GUN!!!
Sting and the Police have already been mentioned, but yeah, so many of his/their songs have simple, but absolutely effective basslines that work perfectly. Some of my favorites include Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, All This Time, the Lazarus Heart, Something the Boy Said, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You... a lot of these just consist of 2 or 4 notes but it works so damned well!
