singer tryouts

So a few months ago we lost our singer due to his crazy work schedule. He just couldn't make the time up. Over the past couple of months we have been actively searching for a replacement. We have had a couple decent guys, and one girl. The problem that I am seeing is that we have tried a couple of formats to see if the person is a fit as far as sound and personality. We have given the singer the choice of a cover song or two, we would learn them, then have them out. Also, we have sent a singer an email with our original songs and lyrics and had them try that as well. Needless to say, it is a very difficult process and I am asking my fellow TBers if they have a formula that they have seen or used in this situation? I have placed an ad on the local website and have had some great responses. I just want to make sure that I give each person the same type of opportunity so that us as a band can pick the one that fits best. We are a 80%-90% original band that is still fairly new. Our project started last fall and after the loss of our singer has been basically stale. We all love to get together, but without a vocalist it is just a jam band. We did play some shows with the old singer with great reception and feedback. I'm sure what momentum we had is gone and we are starting from scratch, which is fine. Any pointers, help, or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
