OK, I still think it's one of the items I mentioned. You could try a filter modeling unit like Line6, or one of those Boss "Groove Boxes" with filter modeling. If you don't want to get in that deep, try a parametric EQ (one with full control over frequency, bandwidth, and cut/boost per band) or a wah pedal.
 
Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers is pretty famous for doing this. For around half of his tracks he either sang through a loudspeaker into the mic or used "Gibbytronix" which was some pitch shifter he bought at a garage sale or something like that. I personally love it :D
