Single 2X15 cab or two 1X15's?

One advantage a 2X15 or two stacked fifteens has is that the added height positions the drivers closer to ear-level; a HUGE advantage in my book.

That said, the cabs I gig with the most are 3-way designs, so if I could obtain a great 1X15 that incorporated a mid driver on an angled baffle aimed up toward my ears, I might be satisfied with a 1X15.

I just put my LDS 15/6 up on a stand. Same result as another cab but the stand weighs 22lbs and cost 89 bucks. The fEarful type 15/6 is rated at about 500 watts at 8 Ohms. I don't gig frequently but my last 2 gigs were a large indoor hotel hall with 300 people and a small outdoor party-loud rock band-the master on my M9 never reached noon and I did not go through our PA at the outdoor gig. YMMV. Here's an older pic of the cab and stand (the GB head is gone)

However. I have a 2x15. Because its cool as f***. So you gotta ask yourself one thing, how cool are you?

Not quite. Adding a second cab gets you an additional 6dB of voltage sensitivity. That can be a major factor if you have an amp that's rated at less than 250w/8 ohms, which is most tube amps. The single cab 3015LF option is viable if you have enough power to push it, but V4B and Fender Bassman 100 or for that matter Hartke 3500 owners won't benefit from its capabilities at all.

I love my PH115's. They are pretty heavy but they fit in a small car and the pair sound huge together. A lot tighter and punchier then many would imagine!

But seriously, I'd vote 2x15, but it's a personal choice. I throw in the "Sunn 2x15 w/ K140s" vote. Especially if you're using a lower powered head. It's such a sweet sounding box.

i love my 2x15 swr big bertha. fairly "portable" too. the giant wheels on the back and 3 different handles helps. just my opinion but i like the look of a 2x15 especially with my 2x10 goliath jr on top

lomo, i've been looking for a stand for my 115 to get it up closer to ear level. can you tell me a bit more about that stand? is it marketed for the purpose you are using it for? all the stands i have found have been of the tilt variety..not useful for me as i like my head on top of the cab!

I dont know a lot about acoustics, but it seems that the 2x15 cabs have more extension than dual 1x15 cabs. I am not sure if this is because the two drivers share a single uninterrupted volume or if it is because there is better driver coupling going on?
I would certainly not assume that 2 1x15 is exactly equal to a 2x15. If for no other reason than because 1x15" are seldom as substantial as a 2x15.
I have had dozens of both over hte years and keep coming back.
Right now I have one of each. a 2x15 and 1x15. Sounds good.

I think that if I was to be restricted to a single cab to cover all gigs it would be my Berg NV215. Not too difficult to schlep and with the added 6" driver covers the whole frequency range pretty darn well. Plus it doesn't look out of place in a small gig (I think) and has the grunt for just about any big stage depending on what you drive it with.

That's what I'm talkin' about! My foray into 10" drivers is over. I hearken back to the days when I played an old Peavey 215 and sounded like god's balls.
I'm getting ready to order a Mesa Traditional 115 to pair with my GK 115, until I've saved up enough for the 2nd Mesa.
