Single Coil Pickups

Hi,
I currently have DiMarzio DP123 pups in my 4 string American Fender Jazz. First of all, am I correct in saying that these pups are dual coil? I would like to install new pups with more midrange. Are Seymour Duncan Classic Stack pups and the Fender Custom Shop 60's pups single coil pups?

Electronically they're a P pickup that looks like a J pickup, yes.

Model J's should have midrange in spades, have you checked are they wired series (within each pickup)?

You don't need to worry about how many coils the pickup has. Unless there is a specific single coil pickup that strikes your fancy, you should either be open to any pickups, or choose humbuckers for the sake of not having to deal with 60Hz hum.

I've used Model P a million times in the past and it's actually quite a middy pickup (when wired correctly in series). If anything, I'd expect a Duncan Stack to be a bit more muted in tone and output and Custom 60s to sound a little more traditional J, which to me is slightly scooped.

If you really want something with more mids, I'd go for something with more windings or a bigger magnet. Maybe Duncan SJB-2.

Our Classic Stacks are not traditional singles...they are stacked singles, which makes them a humbucker. If you are after more midrange, the Quarter Pounds are a good choice, and so are the Apollo Jazz set.

I thought the QP's were mid-scooped. Not true?

Stacks will typically be lower output than inline split coils. Not sure if that general rule applies to the Duncans or not.

Dimarzio Area J's have noiseless single coil tone and are relatively flat (not mid scooped). Same with Nordstrand splits but they are more money.

Higher mids are scooped. There are a lot of lower mids. So...we are both right!
