Single coil vs split coil for my first bass

Split coil. A p copy is a killer first bass. Even better, a Squier VM would be pretty great.

Rod, if you get your single coil P Bass, and you have a hum problem, and/or need that punch that the split coil pickup has, Nordstrand, Lindy Fralin, and others make split coil humbuckers that will retrofit the stock single coil.

This is true. The split-coil single coil-sized humbuckers are great, too. They are pricier than some others, but do give a very nice single coil sound w/o hum. In fact, Seymour Duncan make a Vintage Rails that essentially uses this design, but with rail polepieces and parallel wiring to give a very close to single coil output and sound. However, IMO&E, the parallel setting on a Hotrails sounds about the same in blind taste testing and is more widely available.

Is lower midrange about 250hz/500hz ? Am i wrong ?

I put it like this: Low frequencies are <80Hz, low-Mid is about 80-180Hz, Mid is about 180Hz-1.3kHz, hi-Mid is about 1.3-3.5kHz and treble frequencies are 3.5kHz<. This is mainly going off the spectrum of my graphic EQ, though.

(30Hz, 40Hz, 60Hz, 100Hz, 180Hz, 340Hz, 660Hz, 1.3kHz, 2.6kHz, 5kHz, 10kHz, 15kHz.)

I've finally got the PB-50. She's gorgeous !

The bass is really great and the Wilkinson pickup doesn't deliver too much hum... Perfect for the price !
