Single coil vs split coil for my first bass

I agree with you. Any example of great single coil humbuckers ? I can't find any !

So many. Do a search here for Squier Bronco pickup replacements. Personally, I like the Seymour Duncan Hotrails with a DPDT Parallel/Series 500 KOhm Volume Pot. The rails pole pieces eliminate dead spots and the series/parallel wiring adds some different tones with just a switch and it won't change the look of the instrument to casual viewers.

I would also strongly consider Hipshot Lite weight tuners, Planet Waves Elliptical strap buttons, and a neoprene strap pad (like for luggage) as upgrades.

All of this stuff can be found on Amazon.com

Thanks Johnny !! That's very helpful

I know Charizm but my budget is really limited and I didn't find any bass with switchable single coil for +/- 150 bucks.
But thanks, this would be a solution :)
I must have missed the post with your budget. Sorry.

BTW, I highly recommend the bass I linked to and you can find used ones for around $500 - $600. Used to have one myself and in its price range it stomps the competition.
You could also try looking for bolt-on necks that feature the same coil tapping ability; they ought to be less.

In fact I like the distinctive tone of single coil bass. I can't explain why. As you said, it sounds articulate. I just don't know If it can sound "metal". Do you know any (masochistic) bass player who plays metal with a single coil (rather than split coil) ?
I've read that Bob Daisley used a 50's P Bass with a single coil on Ozzy's No More Tears. The bass sound on that track is huge. But there's a lot between that pickup and what we hear coming out of our speakers. I get the impression that they spent a huge amount of time with the parametric EQ, compression and other processing to get that sound.

Thanks Mvilmany, you're amazing !

My apology to Roderick, for yesterday's hijack of your post, I should not have been so confrontational with Dan, there would be more usable info without arguments, and none of it was worth getting him banned.
You're, ok. I think that the guy (Dan) meant well, and sort-of had a vague idea about what he was talking about, but his explanations were unclear and contradictory.

Even though I think that he meant well, Talkbass is a place where civilized people offer support and polite discourse. Internet arguments and defensive behavior belong in some awful place like a Guitar message board or 4chan.

We can honor his memory in verse:

"Dan, the man, with the master plan, opened his can, and got himself banned."

I lol'd! I really wish that I could be this mature and funny. great post.

@RoderickF as another guitarist in bassist's clothing, I can't wait to hear how your scpb bass comes through on your demos. I hope that you post some!

Be sure I'm gonna do it ! Noone bother me more than a guy who appears (out of nowhere) in forums, takes informations then disappears...
And maybe that will help someone who is interrested in the PB-50 or someone who wanna know how a single coil PB can sound for metal :bassist:

The SC precision pickup is a beautiful tone, but I prefer the unique punch and presence of the split coil by a wide margin, but that's me. I went through the stock, then a Lollar, and ended up liking Lindy Fralin's split-single coil the best in the LPB CV 50's precision bass I played for a while. The Lindy is nice and quiet and had the best E string (and overall) response.

I understand split coil lovers. In fact, my two favourite bassists are Sting and Steve Harris, that's why I was indecisive ! Thanks !
