From one lefty to another, I'm curious, how is it that you feel it's better to have the volume and tone pots wired backwards? To me it's intuitive that clockwise should mean louder, like on every other volume knob in the world. I rewired my first bass (an MIM Jazz) to correct that.
Be that as it may... I'm not going to tinker with my new P7 any time soon.
But since you've been under the hood of a lefty Sire: when you say that there's "correct taper" on the pots do you mean they're reverse log pots which are wired in reverse?

That Sire is SO SICK, Chris !! I'm also a lefty, but I play righty. I never considered knob direction. Interesting. I hope you like your Sire P7 as much as I do. I have no desire to get any other model. The P/J does all I want. Plus, having that P sound esp on the Sire is sooo down and dirty cool.

I'd say the V7 Vintage maple neck would probably get you there.

I'm pretty sure the Geddy Lee sound is 90% Geddy Lee and 10% everything else. The growl comes from a fairly low action with a heavy playing style, and he used a good bit of distortion.

Also I think a lot of his sound comes from the Rotosound Swing Bass strings. I'm sure the bass contributes something, but I think the tone of a Geddy Lee signature and a MIM and a Sire V7 is going to be more similar than different. I am willing to bet that if Geddy picks up a V7 and strings it and sets it up like he wants and plays it through his rig no one would notice the difference.

Nobody is going to sound like Getty Lee playing any kind of bass other than Geddy Lee himself.
Those YouTube video reviews - well most are not very good with a lot of players banging and/or slapping.
It's great to idolize a players sound, but in the long run it's best to take that knowledge and turn it into something that's your OWN sound.
I've played the Fender Getty Lee model as well as the Fender Marcus Miller model basses, and my first impression of both basses (right off the wall) was that they both played like sh*t. A lot has to do with how a bass is set up. You'd have to ask Geddy's techs to get even close to his actual sound.

I hear you and I'm totally aware of the fingers ARE the tone thing, etc. I'm glad you spelled Geddy's name correctly the 3rd time .
I guess I'll just assume that the Sire has the pickup placement in the "correct" position to get that growl. It's either standard or 70's position, so I'll compare photos. I've played many jazz basses that sound tame and others that sound like a 1/4 mile race car waiting for the green light on the Christmas tree.

I have a 1st gen V7 with a rosewood fingerboard that growls like a MFer. I also have a V7-5 Swamp Ash/Maple 2nd gen that does the same, maybe even more. I keep the action on the lower side and dig in a bit to get the growl. I get a lower growly sound by using GHS Pressurewound strings. When I crank the amp volume the sound is mean. I think you will be fine with a Sire Jazz, maybe the swamp ash/maple model would be better. Again, I don't think the bass used is going to matter so much as the technique, setup and rig. Remember, in the early years of Rush he used a Rickenbacker and even used Steinberger and Wal basses for a bit before settling permanently on the jazz bass.

Not sure what to do with my P7 5 string , I just ordered a Sadowsky PJ 5 string . The Sire has a P body the Sadowsky a Jazz body , so do I keep the Sire and put flats on it or move it along. It's a 1st gen but it plays well , it weight is 9.6 lbs which was fairly light for a 1st Gen , I don't see it getting much use , but you can never have to many basses.

If you can keep afford to keep it I'd recommend that. I love my Sadowsky's but the Sire is always my backup to gigs. The neck of my gen 2 V7 is amazing and it's thinner than my Sadowsky's which always has me picking it up. I wouldn't hesitate to play it over anything else too.

I say keep the Sire and put GHS Precision Flats on it.
