To me, those PJ Yammy are up to the task but they lack character and are "too smooth" through the mix. Many friends of mine gave a try to Yamaha 4 and 5 strings but they came back to a standard p bass after a few years.

But hey, I play hard rock in a loud band so take it with a grain of salt.

That’s how I felt about my Lakland, dull and boring.

My Fenders are all rude and full of attitude.

I can totally see your point. A lot of people think that PJs can’t match the depth of a P sound. Maybe they’re right...

Some people say the placement of the P p'up is just a bit off, but I think they don't wind that p'up quite as much as on a traditional P, so that it doesn't totally overpower the J p'up.

A PJ with the P in the standard location with the P soloed sounds exactly like a P bass IME, IMHO and all that.

Both models will have better and worse instances. At that level, it's best to try the exact bass you'll be purchasing, like picking an Hogwarts wand. I would lean towards the Fender, but eventually buy the one which is lighter, more playable, and offers better sound balance between strings, frets, etc.

Absolutely yes! My Sire P5 is comparable to my Am Pro II Fender P Bass. It's better in some ways and the Fender is better in other ways.

Personally I'd go with the sire if youre swapping pickups anyway.
Call me biased but I have more faith in sires build quality.
And I prefer sires necks etc, I just loathe their pickups.

At the end of the day as always see if you can try before you buy.
Because a good fender is great, but not a brand to ever buy sight unseen.

I saw someone mention "fender troll" but it's just personal experience.
I'm starting to think my country gets rejects shipped because from one's I tried it's 9 bad ones for every 1 OK one.

The only problem is that where I'm from (Barcelona) there aren't any shops that stock Sire basses. I might go for the Fender instead. I loved the build quality and I'll have a bit more of a go with the pickups

While Sire makes a solid bass, I can't get past having MARCUS MILLER in big letters on the headstock! That said, I have a limited edition Player II and I love it! Very comfy to play, excellent build quality and sounds great. The Player II basses are great, I also have a Player II Jazz. Here's mine, I did change out the stock bridge for a high mass Fender one, but that is just my preference. Nothing wrong with the stock bridge.

Ridiculous design choice no matter if it was my favorite bassist or not.

MusiciansFriend and Guitar Center both still have them on their site. This color was just for them.
