That is weird. Where did you buy them from? I bought a set of DA tapes off Amazon (my usual vendors were out of them at the time) last year and received an odd string in the pack.

SIT powerflats

Yeah, it's odd. A client just received a -sold as new- set of D'Addrio Helicore upright bass strings- and they'd been installed on a bass prior! He sent them back, and we're waiting for the new set right now.
I just looked at my Amazon orders page. I bought eight sets of Power Steels, but no flats. I just searched my Ebay orders. I got them there.
I don't know if the seller opened the package- I do not recall being suspicious of any tampering. The overall timbre' and attack/decay of the set, was not as pleasing to me as the Slinkys, even with the possible Chrome low B.
I use my Sire V-7 basses for contemporary music, in cover band situations. I'd prefer rounds for some things, but those Sire basses are active and I much prefer flats on them, overall. I also like that I just leave them on, like, for years. That bass in my avatar, is all Alembic electronics, and new SIT stainless rounds as often as I can afford to change them. It sounds like Entwistle's Alembics. As fun and pleasant as that is, I find myself reaching for the Sires with EB Slinky flats when I'm called for gigs now.
One way to tell if the low B is the D'A Chrome .132 is to see what color the ball end is. The Chrome .132 in a retail package should have a purple ball end if it was mixed in with the SIT by the seller on eBay.
I also just ordered powersteel 40,60,80 100,120 for my Kiesel Brian Bromberg I just got !I use the SIT Power Wound Nickels 40-100 and now have a set of the Power Steels 40-120 on order. It would be nice to keep it consistent. I'm fussy that way.
Ok... I couldn't resist... Just placed an order for a set of these flats (45-105) to try. As a big fan of SIT strings, I owe it to myself at least to give them a chance. At only $35 it wouldn't be a big loss even if they don't work out. I just have to decide which bass to try them on.
SIT Power Steels 40-60-80-100-120... I ordered mine from Strings By Mail. $23.90 + $9.72 for shipping = $33.62.

The thing was I going back and fourth between either super steels or power steels or the fusion stainless which I’ve never used (used nickel)
But ordering from strings by mail I didn’t see any singles on the site and …. I was lazy , I didn’t want to email so I just saw it there on just strings and ordered through them..
I’ve already ordered before from there too but maybe next time I’ll give them a shout

I was always curious enough about the Dunlop Flats to consider trying a set. But the price kept going up and up... Meanwhile, I started reading about intonation issues with them, so I eventually ditched the idea of trying them. The 45-105 set is now listed for $64.99 at SBM.
If the SIT Foundations are an answer to the Dunlop Super Brights, the Power Flats could be an affordable alternative to the Dunlop Flats.
I've dealt with Matt at SBM for almost 10 yrs now. When I need anything that's not listed on their website, I simply email him ([email protected]) and he always responds. At the time of my ordering the Power Steels, the 40-120 set wasn't officially listed, but no problem ordering it with Matt's assistance.
I wonder how the low E string sound? I currently use Rotosound 66 for rounds, as they've got the most consistent E string compared with the other 3 strings. I think John Entwistle designed it to be that way. I'm a bit tempted by the relative low price of SIT, especially flats (compared with Rotosound 77), but I don't want to sacrifice on low E.
I used Rotosounds from about 1969, to 76... then, I got a completely dead full set from Mannys Music in Manhattan, in 1976. In that year, they cost about $21.00- a lot back then. I couldn't believe it. Must have been a defective batch of wire, or something. Later that year, I had Carl Thompson build me a bass- and he turned me on to his brand of strings, which were actually heavy gauge D'Addario nickels. I used those, and then the lighter gauge XL 170 D'Addario nickels, until about 1985 or so- then, Ken Smith stainless for a while.. I have used D'Addario stainless rounds, and Ernie Ball Slinky stainless rounds, both sets are excellent. The S.I.T. rounds sound great to my ears.. sort of in between the nice 'zing' of stainless rounds and the slightly mellower nickels.
