Skyline vs. Metro

I did a visual comparison as well as a non-amped comparison of my JO5 and DJ5 (both Korean Skylines) and I can not tell a difference in quality or fit and finish....my DJ is a little heavier and the neck radius is really different, but they both seem easy to play and the fit and finsh seems comparable in both

my JO is set up lower however....

I may get the J-retro out and do a sound comparison to see what I think there....I LOVE blocked necks...so for me, the "look" of the DJ (white with RW) may be "classier" then my JO (Nat/RW).....but???

Don't be too quick to judge until you have played a Metro, and more importantly played one on a gig. They are completely different than the Laklands. That is why it is a tough comparison. They are going in a bit different direction in terms of sound etc. I have had Skylines and US Laklands, and they are all great basses(The Plek'd Skylines feel GREAT). One really needs to find out what works for them and their situation before judging by price between the Metro and Skyline.

I had a Sadowsky outboard pre for a short bit (lost at a gig) which I ran my US JOs through. It sounded absolutely fantastic. I am a big fan of Sadowsky basses. If I was really into a more modern sound, I'd probably order a Will Lee or Metro UV70. I just generally like the old-school passive tone of my Laklands.

Some are very killer. Like the hollow body Skyline- WHEW!!!!

Metro: Hand built by a small shop of guys personally trained by Roger Sadowsky. You want the "Sadowsky" sound, but don't need a fancy top or your hearts desire of wood combo's- ash/maple or alder/rosewood is perfect, even Roger himself will tell you to get a Metro.

Yes they are both "offshore". The Metro series isn't going after the same share of the market as the Skyline is.

I owned a DJ5 with a J-retro and bought a Metro UV70 5-string with single coils which are pretty comperable aside from price (5-string '70s style Jazz basses). I put the same new strings on both, and gave myself two weeks to pick one and sell the other. Obviously, there was a big price difference, and I would have happily kept the DJ and spent the money I saved on other bass gear. But I felt the Metro was the better bass -- it "sang" more (had a better unplugged tone), had slightly better construction, and a tone I preferred to the DJ (which had Aeros). While the DJ was a better dollar-for-dollar value IMO, I could afford to keep the Metro, so I sold the DJ5 and haven't missed it. It was a solid bass, but just not quite on par with the Metro.

I have a Metro RV5 and a Lakland Skyline DJ5 with an Audere Pre. I also have a Fender P5 that I run through a Sadowsky outboard pre.

I've gigged with all three and can say that I love each of them for different reasons. The fit and finish on each is appropriate for the price point. IMO that really is the best basis for comparison...do you feel you got your money's worth.

I say play what suits you, what feels good, what sounds good in the mix and what you think is worth your hard-earned $$.
