Slap - Active or Passive

I think strings play a far greater role in ability to slap

I'm not a super-slapper, but when I'm playing a passive J-bass on stage, I know I have a slap contour at the ready in my Sansamp BDDI. Just stomp it, slap out a little solo or a fill, then switch it off and keep on groovin'.

I also use my SABDDI with my Fender Jazz live.
What settings do you use ?

I think you are asking the wrong question here. Either type is great for slap. If you are looking for more of a modern sound for slap like the MTD sound or a Marcus Miller slap sound then active is the way to go. EQ some extra bass in, cut mids add treble and away you go
