Well the sound im after is from a song i found on this forum - Fred Hammond - I want my Destiny
Epic slapping
That's a peavey cirrus 5 with walnut body and neck, bubinga top.
They do have a great slap tone.
Modern 24 fret basses generally have a more compressed and polished kind of slap tone. A peavey cirrus or a ken smith are great examples, but they do also have a somewhat unique pickup placement. The neck pickup is closer to the bridge compared to many other designs. I'm guessing it contributes to that unique kind of snap they have.
Jazz bass on the other hand with that short 20 fretter has more of a midrangey, fat and twangy "spank" kind of quality in the tone. IMO more funky, but can get a bit ugly down low in a more spacious mix too.
My two main players are a 70's style active jazz and a peavey cirrus. Both are brilliant but still quite differend. I personally consider a good jazz bass to be sort of like the holy grail of slap tone, but that's more in the sweaty, grindy and funky kind of way. When looking for more refined tone, the cirrus is hard to beat for the price.
Stingray is also great, but personally I don't dig that slap tone so much. I'm one of those rare people who consider stingray to really excel at fingerstyle. And it's just not the ray, any single pickup bass with the pup close to the bridge just doesn't have enough twang for me when slapped.
There are plenty of great slappers around, so if possible, go out there and experience.
Btw, are you in Europe? There are a couple of great choices around that are rare or unrealistically priced in US.
Edit. oh, in Norway. Good stuff
