I'd like to vote for the Ken Smith BSRJ4. Excellent slapability. For the price, I have to go with any recent Squire. Their QC has been bumped up a notch. For under $400, no other brand can hang.

Depends on your touch. I know people who have slapped on a fretless for years and haven't even had the board dressed.

I like the Musicman slap tone over the Jazz bass tone. Has more "balls" for lack of a better term

Ok it's a personal mather and you can slap indeed on everything ... but if you want to go real funky ... with a crystal clear, fat low, tight as a rock precence, there is only one; a original not modified older MM Stingray <'93 ... thus not the cheap copy's/clones and not even OLP from MM self!!

It also depends on your style and your slapping-technique! But for me the MM is always OK! For my "slapping"-studio-gigs, most of time I use my Stingray (unless the songwriter or producer wants something else)!! That's because of the natural specific sound ... and on the end the stingray always sounds very fat, crystal clear and highly defined in the mix without a lot of EQ!! (Also on stage!!)

TIP: Be carefull with neck-thickness, fingerboard radius, string-space and other neck-specs! Find the bass with what's best for you!!

It's all about the slap tone you're after. The Marcus Miller Jazz mentioned about has a great slap tone (if that is what you like). Alot of people are nuts about MM StingRay's slap tone. With the right strings, I like the slap tone on a P bass. YOU are gonna have to decide this one.

I bought a P bass to learn to slap on because I like the sound better than J basses and I don't know if I could have scored an MM as nice for the same $$$.
