Maybe you just don't like they way a P sounds slapped?

I personally love it, and my main gigging bass is a P. I slap on a few tunes most nights and love the tone. No pedals, no compressor, no eq, just P tone. But you gotta like that tone. It's not going to sound like a jazz or a modern bass w humbuckers.

Embrace the P tone as is. Don't fight it.

I am currently rocking my '59 CS Precision as my main bass. It suits all my songs just fine, but I have been wondering about getting a pedal to get a bit more of a "modern" scooped slap tone for one or two songs which would benefit from that particular sound. I am not expecting any miracles of course; I understand that I won't get any sparkly graphite Statusesque tones from a P bass.

So the question is, what kind of device would do the trick? I have been looking at the Funkulator pedal, which seems to be built specifically for this purpose, but I don't know how well it works on a P bass.

I could just get a decent EQ like the Empress ParaEQ, but it could be overkill for my needs. Do you guys have any ideas on this?

Slap on a P Bass can sound really good. Great Examples: Freddie Washington on Patrice Rushen's "Forget me Nots", Boz Scaggs "Low Down", S.O.S. Band "Take the Time, Do it Right". Strings are a big one here... Round Wound for sure. For a Pedal, I would think something like a Aguilar ToneHammer or really any Active Preamp in a pedal.

My new P-bass sounds pretty yucky when I slap it. I have to really tweak the EQ controls on the amp and even then it doesn't quite sound as good as my ibanez does slapped.

I would suggest the Seymour Duncan paranormal with the slap switch or the mxr bass diplus which I use which has a smiley face eq switch

Slap that P up and embrace it. That's what I do. I thought you have to have that J pup in the back but ever since I grew up I realized P has the best funk sound.

get a simple graphic e.q. pedal...Boss..MXR..EH..etc...you can usually find them cheap on the used market...
If you want something a little more versatile\different..the MXR bass distortion+ is a cool option...don't be put off by the name.
it's a very versatile pedal that has 2 channels, one clean and one distortion that is blendable..the clean side has a switch that scoops out mids while shifting the bass and treble frequencies. works great for instant slap tone..the dist. side is like the clean side with the switch engaged but you can blend in the dist. and it's a really nice D.I. if you ever need one..

I usually just hate slap, but walked in here finding out i really do love 70's p-bass slap. How did i forget that haha

I'd go with the Mark bass miniboost, Creation Audio Funkulator or the Grizzly if you want dirt capability. Or go simple with a Boss GEQB-7. All of these will get you an instant-on scooped sound. Don't forget compression. Maybe an MXR or compressore. FEA and ovnifx-smoothie are incredible if you can find them.
