I wonder why they call it a pickguard anyway? since when did they ever guard a pick? It should be called a paintguard and you would probably be wise to get a stickerguard for your bass.
I believe it comes from acoustic guitars, cos it guards against you chopping lumps out of the top of the instrument with your plectrum!!. Check out Willie Nelson's guitar for an extreme example of what can happen, if you don't have one.
