Hi TalkBass. I have a question for you seasoned upright dudes about tuning machines.

The orchestra teacher at my high school asked me to look at a bass where the "A" string was slipping. I don't know all the correct part names, but the string post(? The thing that the string is wrapped around) is slipping when it gets any tension on it. We tried to tighten the screw that holds it on but didn't have any success - should this be the solution? Is it something where we should take the whole tuner assembly off the bass to get better leverage? .

Do any of you have an idea of how to adjust this or if it's prolly stripped and needs replaced or whatever? I looked for a web page that might explain how to maintain or adjust the machine tuners but didn't find anything.

Thanks for any help you can offer..
