It is said that many concert pianists don't play full tempo until the performance. They practice perfectly. The thought is that you can't play what you don't practice, so if you didn't practice mistakes, no mistakes can come out in performance.

Slowing the tempo to practice as a band.

I had the opposite experience while filling in with a band I hadn't played with before. After set up we ran through the songs at a very quick tempo. Later in the day when we actually performed I almost sprained a muscle putting the brakes on as the first song started. They neglected to tell me that they practice the songs faster than the intended performance speed.
True, but playing at a slower tempo and then brinigng the song up to speed can be a very effective way to do just that.
Yes, it is a good blame-free diagnostic when all else fails (but usually someone will take time to gently or roughly educate the offender). Plus it is probably necessary for nailing tuttis without wasting too much time if no recording is available.
