How old is she? There are lots of different options, depending on her age and size.

I just started my five-year old daughter on a 1/4 size cello, restrung as a bass. She's using a fractional violin bow with it. I'll probably move her to a 1/2 or 3/4 size cello this year before jumping into a fractional bass.

In my experience, 1/4 size basses are appropriate for "normal" sized fourth graders (9-10 years old?). 1/8 size basses can be used by a (roughly) 7 or 8 year old. I've seen 1/10th size basses before - I think they're roughly the same size as a full size cello, but easier to play as a bass because the shoulders are easier to get around.

I have lots of information and resources about this, if you want to know anything specific, please PM or email me.

My daughter started on a 1/2 size bass at age 9 and moved to a 3/4 at 11. She's just average size and has always been able to get around on my 3/4 at home for practice. And still playing at 15.

I believe a good setup is far more important than string length. A badly set-up 1/2 or 1/4 is still torture for a youngster. As DB is physically hard work, if they don't enjoy it they'll give up.

Hi, I'd appreciate any information or resources about setting up a 3/4 cello as a double bass for a youngster?

I have a 6 year old grandson who is too small for a 1/8 size bass

George Vance at Invalid Link Removed is a good resource for good quality small instruments and also very knowledgeable about starting young players.
