I've owned both. I prefer a Smith overall for my tastes, but if you want lots of fingerstyle growl a Spector might be a better choice. I prefer the slap tone of the Smith though.

Smith or Spector

I voted for the Smith. I have a 1990 BT6 and it's growlier than all heck. More so than any Spector I've ever played. I also prefer the slap tone of the Smith. I like my older BT6 better than my friends' recent Black Tigers because of its slightly more laid-back presentation and midrangey character, no doubt due in part to its age and wood selection. It also couldn't have hurt that Chuck Rainey was the original owner.
