In a split second, plugged into a speaker output instead of a line output. Smell of smoke emanating from my computer. :(

Anyway, two questions: First, is the audio hardware likely to be on the motherboard, or a plug-in module? Second, can anybody recommend a cheap USB audio adapter?

First-what model computer?
Second-what did you plug in to smoke?
Remember once you let that majic smoke out it does not go back in.

We old heads need more info.

Although, if you want to get on good terms with the technicians repairing your gear, try to gather as much of the smoke into a jar as possible. You can then ship the jar with the laptop to make the tech's job easier.

I have sometimes smoked things and had them continue to work for years. Occasionally an outer coating smokes or smoke comes from heating accumulated dust etc. but the circuit continues to function

I have an old laptop that was plugged into the wrong DC voltage or polarity. It smoked and the area around the power jack smells. Still, it continues to function perfectly if I plug the correct voltage and polarity (DOH!).
